What is the Heart?

The Heart is a muscular organ which pumps blood around the body it is broken down into two halves (the left side and the right side) each half is then broken down into two chambers, the Atrium (upper chamber) and the Ventricle (lower chamber).

Each Chamber has a different use the right Ventricle pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen which is then carried back by the blood into the Heart via the left Atrium. The Heart needs oxygen to help pump the blood. The Left Ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body which eventually comes back into the Heart via the right Atrium.

The Heart is the centre of the Circulatory systems which is made up of a network of veins arteries and capillaries. Veins carry blood towards and into the Heart, Arteries carry the blood out of and away from the Heart Capillaries are tiny vessels which transport blood from the veins to the arteries.
