The severity of a stroke varies massively, some occur without your knowledge, others cause ongoing and potentially life changing symptoms. If your doctor has cleared you to travel, Freedom can consider a travel insurance policy for after stroke survivors.
To cover all eventualities, we will consider potential effects of your stroke, whether this is a mobility issue or a heart condition such as atrial fibrillation. If you have declared your condition to us and suffer a deterioration to your health before you travel, or a fall during your trip due to muscle weakness or fatigue, you can rest assured that Freedom have got your medical expenses or trip cancellation covered.
If you're travelling with friends or family you can also elect to add them onto the same specialist travel insurance policy so that if any trip complications were to arise relating to either person, everyone on the policy would be covered to claim for this. This would include claims for cancellation of the trip or emergency medical treatment abroad whether it's related to the stroke or another unrelated medical condition.

It can be advisable to obtain a travel insurance for after stroke survivors quote prior to booking your trip, as depending on the destination there can be a large variation in premiums. Freedom Insurance specialise in covering pre-existing medical conditions and do not want to penalise travellers for conditions that are well managed and under control. It’s important to tell us about your stroke and any relating treatment, such as blood thinners, blood pressure or cholesterol medication to ensure you are fully covered in the event of a claim.
Our insurance prices for after stroke survivors are based on a person’s current state of health at the time of taking out a policy, but it is always important survivors declare their stroke and any other diagnosed conditions to ensure that we have all the required information in the event of a claim.
Planning your trip
Plan your trip in advance to make your airline aware if you have reduced mobility, sight or speech as they can often aid with boarding the plane. Airport mobility aids or assistance may also be available
Packing your medication
After stroke survivors must keep medication close, preferably in your hand luggage and pack additional supplies in case of emergency, delays, loss or theft. Consider time zones and make sure your medication is taken at the correct time!
During the flight
After stroke survivors should try to book an aisle seat with additional leg room and take a light walk every so often to keep your blood flowing! Discuss with your GP whether compression socks to prevent clots would be beneficial, especially if it’s a longer flight
You can apply here online or over the telephone; simple and totally confidential. We have friendly and understanding travel insurance agents ready to guide you through the process. To provide you with a quote, you’ll need to let us know where you are travelling to, and for how long. If you are an after stroke survivor you should ensure to declare your condition and any other pre-existing medical conditions that apply to you and anyone else on the policy.
You will be guided through a medical screening questionnaire, where a series of relevant questions will be asked to assess your health. These questions should be answered accurately and to the best of your knowledge. You will then be presented with available policy options, which include cover for declared medical conditions as well as cover for cancellation, baggage, personal accident and lots more.

If you had a recent stroke you should always check with consultant/GP that you are fit to travel. Most airlines would require you to wait 30 days after your stroke and your symptoms to be stabilised before travelling.
On our medical screening system you can enter TIA which will then be rated on this basis instead of a stroke.
Where you are travelling to after having a recent stroke can have a huge impact on the premium, please feel free to contact us on 01223 446 914 we can then go through quotations for different destinations which may assist you on where to travel to.
