Who Is Shine?

Shine is the UK’s largest charity for people with spina bifida and hydrocephalusand Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH): rare neurological conditions that cause complex, lifelong disabilities.

They deliver services and support across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What is Shine’s Vision and Aim?

A society where all those whose lives are affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, and associated conditions, are empowered and enabled through choice and equality of opportunity. We aim to make a positive difference to the lives of people affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, and associated conditions.

What Shine Does:

Shine is working to make this a reality.  We offer free, lifelong membership to anyone affected by SBH.

Shine works on the front line to provide specialist support to anyone living with SBH, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, and associated conditions.

“We give people with these conditions free, lifelong membership to our organisation, and help them to build the knowledge, resilience and support networks they need to live healthier, happier lives.”

We currently assist nearly 15,000 members through:

  • Informing – We provide every one of our members with accessible, relevant information about their condition, and unlimited access to health advice from our Nurse-led team.
  • Supporting – We have a network of regionally based Support Workers who can help Shine members with social and practical issues, such as finances, education, dealing with social services, accommodation and employment.
  • Building Social Connections – We provide opportunities for connection with others.  Joining Shine means people with SBH can talk to people going through the same things, through our online support forums, regular Zoom social groups or face-to-face events.
  • Campaigning – We campaign for prevention of neural tube defects, and work in partnership with the NHS and thousands of professionals in education and social services to improve care for people who have them.
