How to Track a Flight Using Your iPhone for Free

Keeping track of a friend or family member’s flight doesn’t have to be complicated. With just your iPhone and a flight number, you can follow their journey in seconds - and it’s completely free. This guide explains how to track a flight easily, accurately and without downloading any apps.

How to Track a Flight Using Your iPhone (And Yes, It Can Be Free)

A friend is heading off on holiday. A partner flying home after a long week away. A family member is setting off on a big trip. Whenever someone you care about is flying, there’s a natural urge to keep an eye on their journey – not because you’re worrying, but because it’s comforting to know where they are and when they’ll be landing.

It’s usually at this moment that you reach for your phone and wonder how to track their flight using your iPhone, and whether flight tracking is actually free or just another subscription waiting to happen.

The reassuring news is that you can track most flights quickly and easily, without paying for anything at all.

But before we get to that…

Flight Information Isn’t Always as Simple as It Should Be

Flight details are available everywhere – airline websites, airport boards, mobile apps – but that doesn’t always mean the information is clear. One site might show a delay, another might not. An app might ask you to upgrade before showing you the arrival time you actually need. Even airport websites can lag behind real-time updates. And when you’re trying to find out whether someone has taken off, landed early, or been delayed, all this inconsistency can be surprisingly stressful.

You might also have hesitated to download a flight tracking app because many of them claim to be free, right up until you open them and discover that the feature you actually want is locked behind a subscription. So you end up asking the same question thousands of others search every day: Is flight tracker free? And the answer is… it can be.

In fact, if you own an iPhone, you already have a simple, reliable and completely free way to track almost any flight

The Easiest Way to Track a Flight Using Your iPhone

What most people don’t realise is that Apple has built a flight tracking tool directly into the iPhone’s messaging system, and it’s one of the quickest ways to check someone’s journey.

All you need is the flight number – something like BA1476 or EZY2283. Once you have it, open Messages and type the flight number into a text. You can send it to a friend or even to yourself. As soon as it’s sent, your iPhone will recognise it as a flight and turn it into a link. When you tap that link and choose “Preview Flight”, you’ll instantly see the full status of the flight.

The preview will show the departure time, the expected arrival, any delays, which terminal they’re flying into, and sometimes even a live map of the aircraft as it travels. It’s clean, accurate and takes only a few seconds – and best of all, you don’t have to download anything or pay for a single feature.

Tracking a flight doesn’t need to be confusing or costly. With your iPhone and a flight number, you can follow someone’s journey from take-off to landing in the simplest way possible. It’s accurate and gives you the peace of mind you want without any hassle.
