What Are the Best Winter Sun Destinations for 2026?

The clocks haven't gone back yet, but it's already worth thinking about where you'll escape to once the UK winter properly sets in.

Where Did Freedom Customers Actually Go Last Winter?

Spain was a firm favourite with our customers last year, and it’s easy to see why – from sunny beaches to lively resorts, there’s something for everyone. Portugal and Cyprus were also popular choices, while the Canary Islands and Turkey continued to attract plenty of holidaymakers. Greece also made the top ten, rounding off a strong year for European getaways.

Is Spain Warm Enough for Winter Sun?

For many of our customers, the answer is a definite yes. Spain remains a go-to for winter getaways, with places like the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca offering a relatively short flight, plenty of familiar resorts and a welcome bit of sunshine when the UK is feeling its coldest.

It might not be tropical, but for an easy escape from the winter weather, Spain is hard to beat – and that’s exactly what makes it such a popular choice.

Which Canary Island Is Best for Winter Sun?

The Canary Islands are a favourite for winter sun, but each island has its own appeal. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are great choices if you want plenty of sunshine, warmer temperatures and lots going on, while Lanzarote is a good option for a more relaxed break, with its dramatic volcanic landscapes and quieter feel.

If your idea of the perfect winter escape is long beaches and plenty of space, Fuerteventura could be perfect. With so much choice across the islands, it really comes down to what you want from your getaway.

Is Portugal Warm Enough for Winter Sun?

Portugal is a great option if you want a winter break without travelling too far. The Algarve is particularly popular, offering milder weather, beautiful coastal towns and a more laid-back feel than some of the larger Spanish resorts.

For something a little greener, Madeira is a great choice during the winter months. With its mild temperatures, gardens and mountain scenery, it’s better suited to exploring and getting outdoors than spending the whole day on a sun lounger. So whether you’re after a quiet escape or something a bit more active, Portugal has plenty to offer.

Is Cyprus a Winter Sun Destination?

If you’re happy to trade a little heat for a quieter winter escape, Cyprus is well worth a look. It was a firm favourite with our customers last year! Paphos and Limassol offer a great mix of coastal scenery, restaurants and plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the milder weather.

It’s not quite the same winter-sun guarantee as the Canaries, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Cyprus has a more relaxed feel at this time of year.

Just keep in mind that flights can be a little longer, so booking early can help you find a better deal.

What About Turkey and Egypt for Guaranteed Warmth?

Turkey in winter rarely lets you down on heat, and all-inclusive stays tend to be good value – likely why more customers are choosing it. Egypt offers similar guaranteed sunshine, though we see far fewer bookings there, mainly down to the longer flight.

Is Greece Warm Enough for Winter Sun?

Greece in winter is cooler than Spain or Cyprus, but mild enough for sightseeing, and usually better value than in peak summer.

What Should I Check Before Booking If I Have a Health Condition?

We’ve spent 20 years specialising in cover for pre-existing medical conditions, so this matters to us as much as it does to you:

  • Pack enough medication for the full trip plus a few spare days, in original packaging with your prescription details.
  • Check your GHIC is valid – it helps with reduced-cost EU healthcare, but won’t cover repatriation.
  • Declare your conditions properly when you get a quote, so you’re covered from day one.
  • Check how far you’d be from a hospital, especially on islands, if you need regular monitoring.

It’s exactly the kind of thing we help customers think through every day, so a health condition doesn’t have to mean second-guessing your holiday.
