Why the GHIC Card Is a Must for European Travel

If you’re planning a trip to Europe, whether it’s a family holiday, a long-awaited retirement getaway, or a short weekend break, there’s one thing you should take with you: your UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

What Is a GHIC Card?

The GHIC replaced the old EHIC card after the UK left the EU. It allows UK residents access to essential state healthcare in EU countries (and a few others, like Switzerland and Australia) – at the same cost as local citizens.

That means if you fall ill or have an accident abroad, you can get treated without facing sky-high private medical bills.

It covers things like:

  • Emergency treatment
  • Treatment for pre-existing or chronic conditions
  • Maternity care (routine, not planned births)
  • Oxygen or dialysis (with prior arrangement)

Remember, this isn’t private health insurance – It won’t cover everything, and not all treatment is free, but it helps ensure you won’t be charged more just because you’re a visitor.

Pair Your GHIC With Travel Insurance

Your GHIC is powerful, but it’s not a complete safety net. It won’t cover:

  • Repatriation back to the UK
  • Lost baggage or trip cancellations

That’s where your travel insurance comes in. Pairing your GHIC with a good policy means you’re covered for both the essentials and the unexpected.

That’s why we always recommend carrying both. Travel insurance fills in the gaps and offers full peace of mind.

Our Freedom and OK To Travel policies encourage the use of your GHIC card when accessing medical treatment abroad. If the use of your GHIC results in reduced medical costs, we may waive the standard policy excess on your claim, providing additional financial benefit.

How To Apply – It’s Easy (and Free!)

  • Provide basic details and proof of UK residency
  • Each traveller (including children) needs their own card
  • Your card should arrive in about 7–10 days and is valid for 5 years

🚨 Avoid unofficial websites charging fees – the card is 100% free via the NHS application.

And if you forget your card while travelling? You can contact the NHS for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) to get the same cover in an emergency.

Don’t Leave Home Without It!

The GHIC is one of the most useful and overlooked travel essentials. It does not replace travel insurance, but it will significantly reduce costs and stress if you need medical care while away.

So, before you board that plane, apply for your GHIC, pack it with your passport, and relax knowing you’ve taken a smart step to protect your health and your wallet.
