Travelling Abroad with Medicine

You’ve booked your holiday but have you planned for what medicine(s) you can take abroad with you? We bring you information on travelling with medicine.

Talk to your GP about your medicine(s) before the departure date. You may need to ask for a letter from your GP outlining your prescribed medicine(s) to show to the customs officials.

Check the country that you are travelling to. International countries have different legal restrictions for medicines. Don’t leave it until the last minute, you will need to check in advance of your holiday. For further assistance, check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at www.gov.uk/government/publications/foreign-embassies-in-the-uk

Checklist:

  • Keep medicines in the original packaging; displaying labelled contents clearly.
  • Take a copy of your prescription.
  • Whether you plan to travel by air, rail or sea, always check with the transport provider if you may carry medication in your hand luggage.
  • Always carry a spare supply of medication together with a copy of your prescription in case your hand luggage is lost or stolen.

Remember that if you lose your medication whilst on holiday, we will cover up to £200 for the replacement of your lost, stolen or damaged medication.
