Travel insurance can provide cover for unexpected events before and during your trip, depending on the policy you choose.
Emergency medical expenses and repatriation
If you become unexpectedly ill or are injured abroad, your policy may cover eligible emergency medical treatment and medically necessary repatriation.
Freedom offers 24/7 emergency assistance should you need it while away and up to £10 million of emergency medical and repatriation cover.*
Cancellation and curtailment
If an insured event means you need to cancel before travelling or cut your trip short, your policy may provide cancellation or curtailment cover.
Freedom offers up to £15,000 cancellation and curtailment cover per person, per trip.*
Cancellation cover starts when you buy your policy, so arranging your insurance soon after booking can help protect you against certain unexpected events that happen before you travel.
Missed departure
If an insured event causes you to miss your scheduled departure, you may be able to claim eligible additional travel or accommodation expenses.
Freedom offers up to £2,500 of missed departure cover.*
Baggage and personal belongings
Your travel insurance may provide cover for baggage and personal belongings if they’re lost, stolen or damaged as a result of an insured event.
Freedom offers up to £3,000 cover for baggage and personal belongings.*
Other benefits
Depending on the policy and options selected, you may also have benefits such as travel delay, personal liability and personal accident.
Always check your policy wording for the full cover, limits, exclusions and conditions.
*All benefits subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.
Over 60 travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions
Having a medical condition doesn’t automatically mean you can’t get travel insurance.
At Freedom, we specialise in travel insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions. When you get a quote, we’ll ask about your health and medical history as part of our medical screening.
This helps us assess what cover may be available for your circumstances and trip.
It’s important to be open and accurate during medical screening. If a relevant condition isn’t declared, you may not have cover for claims relating to it.
Which pre-existing medical conditions can be covered?
We consider a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions, depending on your circumstances and medical assessment.
This can include conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions, asthma and cancer, as well as many other medical conditions.
If you’re receiving medical treatment, you can still apply for a quote. We can consider cover for people receiving treatment, including chemotherapy.
However, travel insurance does not cover the cost of ongoing medical treatment that you already know you will need during your trip, such as planned dialysis or cancer treatment.
What if my health changes after I buy my policy?
If your health, medication or treatment changes after you’ve bought your policy but before you travel, you need to tell us.
Freedom operates an ongoing medical warranty, so we may need to ask additional questions and reassess the cover available to you.

How much does travel insurance cost when you’re over 60?
There’s no single price for travel insurance over 60. The cost is based on your individual circumstances and the trip you’re planning.
Things that can influence your premium include:
- How long you’re going away
- The type of policy you choose
- Any additional cover you require
If you have pre-existing medical conditions, your answers during medical screening can also affect both the price and the cover available.
The most accurate way to find out what your travel insurance could cost is to get a quote based on your own trip.
Should I choose single trip or annual travel insurance?
The right type of policy depends mainly on how often you travel and the length of each trip.
Single trip travel insurance
Single trip cover protects you for one specific journey.
It’s useful if you’re only travelling once or want cover tailored specifically to the trip you’re taking.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance
If you’re likely to travel several times during the year, annual multi-trip insurance can save you arranging separate travel insurance cover for every trip.
Remember to check the maximum duration for each individual trip and whether your destinations and activities are covered.
Cruise travel insurance for over 60s
Going on a cruise? Check whether your travel insurance includes the cruise-specific cover you need.
Cruise cover can be added to your Freedom travel insurance for additional protection against certain cruise-specific events.
What can cruise travel insurance cover?
Depending on your policy, cruise cover may include:
- Medical treatment on board
Cruise cover is an additional option, so check that it’s included in your policy and read the relevant terms, conditions and exclusions before you travel.
What to check before you travel
Once your holiday is booked, there are a few important things to check before you set off.
Arrange your insurance when you book
Buying your travel insurance soon after booking means your cancellation cover starts when you buy your policy, helping protect you against certain unexpected events that can happen before your trip.
Check Your Medical Information
Tell us about any relevant changes to your health, medication or treatment before you travel.
This is particularly important if you’ve declared a pre-existing medical condition as part of your medical screening.
Check Your Policy
Before you travel, make sure:
- Your destination and travel dates are covered.
- Your medical information is up to date.
- Your cancellation cover is sufficient.
- You understand your policy excess.
- Any activities you’re planning are covered.
- Cruise cover is included if required.
- You understand the policy limits, exclusions and conditions.
Keep your policy documents and emergency assistance details somewhere accessible while you’re away.
