Yes, being over 80 doesn’t automatically mean you can’t get travel insurance. However, age limits vary between insurers and policies and the cost and availability of cover can depend on factors including your destination, trip length and medical history.
At Freedom, we assess your circumstances as part of the quote process. We offer a range of travel insurance options, including some specialist schemes with no upper age limit, subject to the relevant policy terms and medical screening.
Whether you’re planning a European break, visiting family abroad or taking a cruise, our travel insurance can provide cover for a range of situations, including emergency medical expenses, cancellation and curtailment, baggage and travel disruption, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your policy.
What can over 80 travel insurance cover?
Travel insurance can help protect you against a range of unexpected events before and during your trip.
Your available cover and policy limits depend on the policy you choose, so always check your policy wording for the full terms, conditions and exclusions.
Emergency medical expenses and repatriation
If you become ill or are injured while travelling, your travel insurance can help cover eligible emergency medical expenses and medically necessary repatriation.
Freedom offers 24/7 emergency assistance should you need it while away and up to £10 million of emergency medical and repatriation cover.*
Cancellation and curtailment
If you need to cancel your holiday before you travel or return home early because of an insured event, your policy may provide cancellation or curtailment cover.
Freedom offers up to £15,000 cancellation and curtailment cover per person, per trip.*
Cancellation cover starts when you buy your policy, so arranging your insurance soon after booking your holiday can help protect you against certain unexpected events that happen before you travel.
Missed departure
If an insured event means you miss your scheduled departure, you may be able to claim for eligible additional travel or accommodation costs.
Freedom offers up to £2,500 of missed departure cover.*
Baggage and personal belongings
Travel insurance can also provide cover for your baggage and personal belongings if they’re lost, stolen or damaged as a result of an insured event.
Freedom offers up to £3,000 cover for baggage and personal belongings.*
Other benefits
Depending on the policy and cover options selected, other benefits may be available, including travel delay, personal liability and personal accident.
For a full breakdown of what’s included and the applicable limits, read your policy wording before you travel.
*subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.
Over 80 travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions
Having a pre-existing medical condition doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t get travel insurance when you’re over 80.
Freedom specialises in travel insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions. When you apply, we’ll ask questions about your medical history as part of our medical screening process. The information you provide helps us assess the cover available for your trip.
It’s important to answer the medical screening questions fully and accurately. If you don’t declare a relevant condition, you may not have cover for claims relating to it and this could affect your policy.
Which pre-existing medical conditions can be covered?
We consider a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions, depending on your circumstances and the outcome of your medical assessment.
This can include conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions, asthma and cancer, as well as many other medical conditions.
If you’re receiving medical treatment, you can still apply for a quote. We can consider cover for people receiving treatment, including chemotherapy. However, travel insurance does not cover the cost of ongoing medical treatment that you already know you will need during your trip, such as planned dialysis or cancer treatment.
