Medical Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, your medical expenses abroad will be covered on our Freedom Travel Insurance policies should catch COVID-19 whilst on holiday.

Our policies do not cover cancellation if you are unable to travel due to FCDO advice changing prior to your trip. If you booked a package holiday via a Travel Agent or Tour Operator or have booked more than one element from the same provider, then the trip is considered as packaged and trips cancelled due to FCDO advice would therefore fall within the remit of Package Travel Regulations and be eligible for a refund from your travel organiser. See https://www.abta.com/tips-and-advice/is-my-holiday-protected/new-package-travel-regulations for more details.

Our policies are invalid for anyone travelling against FCDO travel advice and as a result any claims would be nullified.

Cancellation is covered if you, or anyone insured on your policy tests positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of your trip starting however there is no cover under this policy for cancellation, abandonment or curtailment claims if the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises you not to travel.

If the FCDO has advised against all, or all but essential travel, you should contact your travel provider. In this situation they have an obligation to provide you with a full refund or alternative holiday.

Single Trip:

We don't impose an upper age limit on single trip policies however the duration we can cover may vary depending on age.

Annual Multi-trip:

For annual multi-trip policies we will cover up to and including the age of 80, for up to 31 days travel per trip. If you are under the age of 75, the trip duration can be increased to 45 days for an additional premium.

Medical questions vary from insurer to insurer, but Freedom operate on the following basis:

If you or anyone named on the policy have ever been diagnosed with any of the following conditions:

  • cancerous, respiratory, heart or circulatory conditions (including problems with blood flow, strokes, high blood pressure and cholesterol)
  • psychological conditions such as stress, anxiety or depression
  • psychiatric conditions such as eating disorders, drug or alcohol abuse or mental instability

Within the last 2 years:

  • conditions for which you've received prescribed medication, treatment or that you have attended a medical practitioner's surgery for
  • any condition that you have attended a hospital or clinic for as an out-patient or in-patient

Have you or anyone named on the policy:

  • been put on a waiting list for treatment or investigation
  • been given a terminal prognosis?

Please note: If you are currently on a waiting list or aware of the need for surgery, tests, treatment or investigations we may be not be able to offer an insurance quote. Please call us on 01223 446 914 so we can explore cover options with you.

If you are unsure about what conditions to declare, you can telephone 01223 446 914 for a quotation with one of our insurance agents.

Should your pre-existing medical conditions, directly or indirectly disrupt your holiday plans, maybe causing you to cancel or possibly resulting in emergency medical treatment abroad, providing you have told us about your medical conditions and cover has been agreed, you will be able to recover your expenses (excesses may apply).

Yes you do our whole aim is to cover you fully, if you do not declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions then you will not be fully covered in the event of a claim and risk invalidating your insurance.

Providing you are both named on your Freedom Insurance policy, should your medical condition cause a claim be it cancellation or whilst you are abroad, your companion will be entitled to claim under the same terms and conditions.

We do not ask for a letter from your GP in order to issue cover. Medical claims will be referred back to your GP so it is important that you answer our medical declaration honestly.

As we operate an on-going medical warranty, you will need to inform us of any health changes that occur between your quotation/purchase date and the date of travel. We may be required to ask additional questions to ensure your travel insurance is up to date and fully covering you for the trip. We will also need to confirm:

  • You are not travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner
  • You aren’t travelling to receive surgery, treatment or investigations
  • You are taking the recommended treatment or prescribed medication as directed
  • You aren’t travelling against any health requirements stipulated by the carrier, their handling agents or any other public transport provider

If you would to discuss any changes in your health or treatment, please contact our call centre on 01223 446 914

We do not need the names of the medication or the dosage. What we do need to know are the names of the diagnosed medical conditions for which you are prescribed medication. If you are unsure of this please consult your doctor.

It all depends when you need the cover to start. Applying for travel insurance once you have finished treatment could, in some circumstances, reduce the premium and make the cover easier to obtain. However, if you need the cover to start whilst you are still receiving treatment because you have a holiday booked and need cover for cancellation, you will need to declare the treatment and we will quote accordingly.

Generally, Freedom is unable to offer cover for people on a waiting list for surgery but there are exceptions to the rule. Talk to the Freedom Call Centre on 01223 446 914 where we can look if there are any options available , it may be that we can find you a policy that excludes cover for the medical condition relating to the pending surgery.

Yes, an EHIC entitles you to free or reduced cost state healthcare for medical treatment that becomes necessary during your trip, for example because of illness or an accident. But you will still need travel insurance as the EHIC only covers EU state hospital treatment. It isn't accepted in private clinics and doesn't include any repatriation cover. For more information, click here to visit our travel tips webpage.

To make a cancellation claim, you will need to contact our claims department, all details can be found here: Claims

If you are cancelling on medical grounds, you will be asked to get a statement and signature from your doctor. Providing the cancellation of your trip is unavoidable (terms and conditions apply) we will pay you up to cancellation limit of your selected policy subject to the policy excess

Gold Cover           Cancellation Cover          £5,000 per person (£75 excess)

If you are admitted to a hospital or clinic while abroad, contact our Emergency Assistance Service who are available 24/7 as soon as possible by calling +44 203 829 6745. Arrangements will then be made for medical expenses covered by the policy to be paid direct to the hospital/clinic.

We use a medical risk assessment tool to enable us to provide you with a quote. You will be asked a number of questions about your medical status. From the information provided we will base our quotes on your health status.

Under ‘Get An Online Quote Now', enter your trip details and you will then be guided through the medical screening process. You will need to declare your medical conditions, followed by a few questions specific to your pre-existing medical conditions.
