Updates to Traffic Light System

The Government have announced the latest changes to the three-tier traffic light system for international travel, which was originally introduced in May 2021 and consists of Green, Amber and Red list countries.

The information detailed within is applicable as of 7th June 2021 and is subject to change based on the latest government and FCDO travel advice.

Freedom Insurance policies are available to countries on the Green and Amber lists but only to destinations where no advice against all or all but essential travel exists from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Whilst a country may have been placed in Green or Amber tiers, this does not mean the FCDO are allowing travel unless essential. All travellers must check the latest advice for their chosen destination at Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office – Travel Advice before purchasing insurance or travelling.

Based on the latest COVID-19 risk assessment, from 8th June 2021: Portugal will move from Green to Amber. Afghanistan, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Trinidad and Tobago have all been moved to the Red list.

The following rules apply on return to the UK:

Green – No quarantine is required on return to the UK for countries on the green list. Travellers must have a COVID test before returning home, and a second test within the first two days of returning to the UK.

Amber – You will be required to take a private COVID test before returning to England and a second test within the first two days you are home. You will be required to self-isolate in your home for 10 days subject to the test to release scheme on day 5.

Red – You are required to take a COVID test before returning to England and a second test within the first two days you are home. All travellers will be required to quarantine in a hotel at their own expense upon return.

Please note: We cannot provide cover to any country or destination where the FCDO are advising against all or all but essential travel, unless the purpose of your journey is essential; please contact us in the first instance for more information on the cover available. There will be no cover under our policies if you travel to a country or area where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office or Government are advising against all or all but essential travel.
